A 301 redirect is a permanent way to indicate to a search engine that the website being visited has been permanently moved to a different address (URL).
What is a 301 redirect?
A 301 redirect is to maintain authority in search results, which is particularly good for SEO. The moment a URL no longer exists, the visitor can be redirected to the correct URL. When it is applied in the right way, a visitor will not be able to end up on a non-functioning website. This is the case with a 404 redirect, where visitors receive an error message when they want to visit the website.
Why is a 301 redirect important?
But why does this matter and how do you apply it correctly? Suppose you have an older website and want to have a new website made. On the new website you want to use SEO content and a user-friendly URL structure. In addition, you want to adjust the navigation on the website and the content could use an update. To achieve this, a redirect is needed, so you move the old URL to a new URL. With this move you don’t want the accumulated value or link juice of the old URL to be lost. That is why it is important to move your website via a 301 redirect, so that the new URL retains its SEO value. Because this method retains the domain authority, trust flow and citation flow and also ensures that anchor texts are copied, this will have a positive effect on the online findability of your website in the search engines.
